An Update From Our Mayor
February 18, 2018
I was fortunate to set up a meeting a couple weeks ago with our MLA/Minister Trevena in Campbell River.
We discussed the following issues,
Highway 28
Although the centre lines were painted last October, the shoulder lines need to be addressed this year. The Minister stated that this was a priority throughout the Province. At times it seems like the size of the gravel they are using on the road is quite large. She said she has heard this many times this winter, and she will look into it.
Highway Cams, apparently the Crest Lake one has been continually damaged, and there is also an issue with how it is powered.
Muchalat Road,
This is the main road of town the Department of Highways is required to maintain it, there are some areas that need to be looked at. The Minister said she will discuss with her Staff.
Transportation, I discussed with her that we need some kind of Transit service to and from Campbell River for our Residents, especially our Seniors that may not drive. They need to get to appointments and other services. The Minister will get back to me regarding this issue.
Grants,
I asked the Minister to look into the possibility of any grant money for Parks. Council has applied for various grants to help pay for our Revitalization plans for Nimpkish Park, but have not been successful so far the Minister will look into.
Library Funding,
At the UBCM meetings last September Councillor Waterman gave the Minister a lot of information regarding the funding for Librarys, she acknowledge receiving the information and told me she will discuss with her colleagues.
Home Care,
After a discussion with Enid at our Health Clinic, I discussed with the Minister that we need more home care in Gold River. Our Senior population is growing and so is the need for more Home Care. I mentioned to her that this is a high priority issue right now. The Minister said she would look into right away.
Cell Service,
The Minister will continue to support this issue, Council has had cell service on their priority list since 2014.
Seniors Home,
We had a good discussion, she gave me some direction that I can look into. Quadra Island has been working on a Seniors home for a long time and have lots of information. I contacted Area Director Jim Abram and he passed me on to the contact people.
The Minister and I agreed top set up another meeting in a couple of months to continue discussing these issues.

Introducing The New Cook At The Ridge
February 15, 2018
Welcome Jason Robertson:
A message from Jason:
I'm originally from Yellowknife, NWT and I have lived in the Yukon off and on for the last 16 years. I've been involved in the food and hospitality industry for 20 years, specifically in the back of house for over 13 years. I have operated a food truck, worked and catered for big hotels, done the camp cook thing at Diavik in the NWT and been a short order cook for smaller restaurants so I have experience in many different culinary settings and situations.
I wanted to get away from the -50 C winter up north, so I came to Vancouver Island and Gold River appealed to me, as it's a small, isolated town (I'm used to living in small little towns in the Yukon like Mayo (pop-300) and Faro (pop-400) so I'm comfortable in a place like Gold River) in the middle of the mountains, yet close enough to the ocean to go out and see some amazing parts of the island not many people get to see.
I'm looking forward to working and living in Gold River and happy to be a part of the team at the Ridge.
