May 10, 2017

In a recent track and field event our athletes did very well.  2nd place was Jacob Tarasoff in shot put and discus. In third place was Logan Road in shot put and discus.  Plus many of our athletes showed personal bests.

Newfound Fishing:

May 06, 2017

My name is Rick and I've been fishing my entire life. My first experience was ice fishing on Nile Island pond in NF. I don't remember much about that day, but I do remember checking the line and feeling the fish tug back! I thought this was the best feeling in the world! I couldn't get the line up fast enough to see how big it was. When I pulled the 8 inch brook trout out of the hole and saw how beautiful it was, I immediately wanted get the hook back down and do it again. I ended up getting 2 that day all by myself... Some people say I'm dedicated, some say I'm passionate, but most people say I'm a fanatic.

The minute I stepped foot on Vancouver Island, I fell in love with everything it had to offer. I was so excited to get out on the ocean and hook up. It wasn't long before I locked down the techniques and started to catch fish. I remember the feeling of "wow, I am finally home" after landing that first BC salmon. I must have been smiling from ear to ear.

Before moving to the island, I studied at Sir Sandford Fleming College and received diplomas in Fish & Wildlife, Outdoor Adventure Skills and Forestry. I quickly realized how everything in the world is connected and how important it is to have a balance in nature. Having this knowledge and understanding of how things work was easily transferred over to my fishing skills. Not only was I catching fish, but now I understood why the fish bite and why they were there in the first place.

Aquaculture restoration is a big interest of mine (if we take the fish we have to replace the fish). While in school, I volunteered in the salmon hatchery for almost 4 years where I learned about fish culture, habitat, diet, water quality, etc. Being around salmon most of the time, really gave me an insight to how fish behave. I found it interesting rearing the salmon, releasing them and then catching them a few years later. It's rewarding to know you are making a difference no matter how small...
